How do I Install a Volkswagen Jetta Water Pump & Timing Belt?

Removing the cooling pump and timing belt

    • 1). Jack up the car and support it on the jack stands. Remove the passenger wheel and plastic covers blocking access to the engine. Remove the plastic engine covers on top of the car.

    • 2). Allow the engine to cool off. Set the heater to "hot" and drain the radiator into the catch basin. The drain valve is located on the bottom of the radiator towards the left side of the vehicle.

    • 3). Support the engine at the oil pan with the jack. Remove the passenger side engine mount and discard the bolts (jack up the engine to maneuver it out of place).

    • 4). Remove the coolant overflow tank. Unbolt the power steering reservoir and move it aside. Remove the coolant lines from the water pump.

    • 5). Remove the accessory drive belt and tensioner. Remove the timing belt covers. Remove the crankshaft damper using the Allen wrenches.

    • 6). Mark the timing belt and camshaft pulley with nail polish or a grease pen. Mark one tooth on the camshaft pulley and the corresponding notch on the timing belt. Repeat for the crankshaft pulley.

    • 7). Remove the timing belt tensioner and slide the timing belt off the crankshaft and camshaft.

    • 8). Unbolt and remove the water pump.

    Installing the new water pump

    • 1). Clean the surface for the water pump gasket on the engine block.

    • 2). Mark the new timing belt by laying it over the old timing belt and marking the notches on the new belt that correspond to the notches on the old belt. Count the teeth between marks on the old timing belt and check to make sure they correspond to the number of teeth on the new timing belt. It is crucial that the timing marks correspond - you risk ruining the engine if they do not.

    • 3). Bolt in the new water pump and gasket and fasten the bolts to 25 Nm for the pump mounting bracket and 10 Nm for bolts holding the water pump in its housing.

    • 4). Wipe any coolant off the sprockets and engine block before installing the new timing belt. Check to be sure the timing marks are aligned. Install a new timing belt tensioner. Install the crankshaft damper and timing belt covers. Install the engine mount. Use the jack under the engine oil pan to raise or lower the engine as needed.

    • 5). Install all the other components you removed in reverse order, fill the engine with coolant, remove it from the jack stands, and start the car.
