Family Camping Or Camping With Children Makes Family Reunions More Fun

103 5
Family reunions or family camping can be a lot of fun and doing them at a campsite can add to the enjoyment.
Family reunions can be done at many different locations depending on the length of the time spent together.
Family reunions done at a campsite are often called family camping.
Camping with children can be a rewarding experience even for those who aren't used to children.
Why organize a family camping trip instead of going to a resort or someone's house? A family camping trip is less expensive than a resort and permits everyone to have their own spot instead of sharing.
This is important as not everyone wants to be with family all the time for a few days.
Remember, one of the reasons for a reunion is people sometimes have conflicts with other members.
The ability to have their own place reduces the stress.
Why a family camping trip might be a bad idea.
  • Family camping frequently means using public restrooms and showers.
    Not everyone enjoys this.
  • Some members of the family may have expensive RVs.
This can be viewed with distaste by those who can't afford them.
  • Not everyone sleeps well in a camping tent.
This can mean disagreements the next day.
  • Some people dislike not feeling clean at all times.
  • Camp food can taste different and this taste is not always enjoyed.
How to organize a family camping trip An effort needs to be made to find a time when the most people can make it.
Like everything else not everyone will make it, but to be successful the more who can the better.
Practice makes most things better.
If the thought is to continue family camping for several years it works best if the same time is used every year.
That assumes that you don't have people with conflicts that they can't resolve.
The big reason for keeping the same date is family members can make plans to keep that date open.
How do you handle meals? There are two basic ways to handle meals.
Meals can be done individually or you can have community meals.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
  • Community meals normally assume that everyone contributes something that is equivalent to the amount they eat.
  • Community meals tend to bring people together.
  • Community meals don't work if everyone doesn't contribute and help with the work.
  • Some consideration can be made if a party contributes in other ways.
  • Individual meals mean everyone prepares their own.
  • An advantage to individual meals is everyone eats something they prefer.
  • A disadvantage is everyone has to bring everything they need.
    No sharing creates extra expense.
Activities Activities can be organized or ad hoc.
Organized activities tend to get people who don't mix well spending time with other family members.
Organized activities need to take into consideration individual needs of the targeted group.
Time limits should be imposed to permit all targeted members to participate.
Ad hoc activities work best where there is a wide variation in individual skills and desires.
Rules Rules are never popular so why would you create rules for a family reunion? Many families do things in a certain way and for them that's the rule.
Here are a few things that should be understood even if not talked about.
  • Is alcohol permitted?
  • Who does what planning?
  • Are sleepovers encouraged?
  • If it is a family camping trip is everyone expected to camp?
  • How are expenses allocated?
  • Can non-family members come?
Family camping or family reunions can be a lot of fun if done correctly.
I know from experience that what starts out as let's try something, and not everyone comes, can become something that is looked forward to as the highlight of the summer.
I do believe that family camping has made my children and grandchildren a lot closer to each other.
However, if not done properly it would drive them apart.
The nice part about family camping is all it takes is a camping tent, a few sleeping bags, air mattresses, and perhaps a camping stove and you are in business.
Camping with children makes a lot more sense than staying in a motel.
Meals themselves cost a small fortune eating out.
