How to Clean Fuel Injectors on a 1999 Z3
- 1). Open the fuel door and remove the fuel cap from your vehicle. Pour the liquid bottle (marked for the fuel tank) into the fuel nozzle. Close the fuel cap and fuel door.
- 2). Open the hood of the vehicle and remove the air intake assembly from the upper air intake. This is the long, black hose that mounts to the top of the engine. Set the drip canister of the two-step cleaner into the upper metal part of the engine, where the air goes in. Hang the bag or canister of the intake fuel cleaner on the reinforcements under the hood.
- 3). Start your vehicle and let it idle. Turn the proportioning valve on the drip canister until the cleaner begins to flow into your vehicle's engine. If you turn the drip canister on too far, you will stall the vehicle. If this happens, close the proportioning valve completely, and start the engine again. Turn the valve in small increments, until the cleaner begins dripping into the intake plenum.
- 4). Allow the drip canister to run until empty. Close the proportioning valve and discard the drip canister. Reassemble the air intake system onto the upper intake plenum on the engine.
- 1). Perform steps 1 through 4 in the previous section. Disassemble the air intake hose at the mass airflow sensor. This is the metal box located in the middle of the hose, between the air filter housing and the engine. Expose the metal opening on the mass airflow sensor, on the air filter side.
- 2). Clean the inside front edge of the mass airflow sensor, using the aerosol spray can and the cotton swab applicator. Perform this same task on the inside of the upper air intake plenum. Doing this will reduce the particles that inhibit your vehicle's air intake and distort the air-to-fuel ratio. Do not spray the aerosol directly into the upper intake plenum, as you will flood the car with fluid, and it will not start.
- 3). Turn the ignition on, making sure the upper intake plenum hose is disconnected. Locate the throttle body on the vehicle--this is the spring-activated lever that makes the engine rev higher when depressed. Depress the throttle body lever with your left hand, until the engine is above idle. Empty the contents of the aerosol can into the upper intake. If the car stalls, restart and use more throttle.
- 4). Reinstall the air intake components and ensure that the hold-down straps are tightened.
