It takes a lot to become an athlete.
As well as the ability to excel in your chosen area, you also need to have an enormous amount of time and dedication to devote to your cause.
Whether you're a dedicated footballer, a long distance runner or a powerful weightlifter, there's one thing that all athletes have in common: the need for good nutrition.
As an athlete, you will be committed to your chosen sport and there is nothing that will stop you from doing what you can in order to get better and better at it.
You probably already have a good diet, but it's also likely that there are things you can do to make it that little bit more effective.
Athletes use up a lot of energy over short periods of time and need to get that energy back.
That's why so many rely on a wide variety of foods and drinks that will help them regenerate strength and endurance in as quickly a time as possible.
Whether you're spending hours a day running or training your body in progressively heavier weights, you need to build what you lose in each training session back up as quickly as possible so you're ready for the next work out.
This is because, if you train your body too hard without having the proper nutrition to back it up, the chances of you obtaining an injury increase dramatically.
You might swear by protein shakes or perhaps handfuls of nuts and dried fruit between sets, but the main goal is to be sure that you're getting an even balance of the essential nutrients, as well as enough calories to keep you on form.
Athletes burn up so much energy that it is quite normal for them to eat around double of what a stationary person eats every day and still lose weight, so find out how many calories you need to maintain your weight and look to hit that number every day.
Ensure you're getting the right mix of carbohydrates, fats and proteins with particular attention going to what sport you work towards.
For example, if you are a body builder, you may need to up your protein because your muscle tissue will need far more help in repairing itself than if you are a long distance runner, which may benefit better from more carbohydrates and fats.
Whatever your sport, make sure your sports nutrition is a key part of your regime - you rely on it far more than you think.
