Cutting a Granite Counter Slab With Hand Tools
- 1). Measure the granite slab to determine where you will be making the cut, using a tape measure.
- 2). Mark the granite slab where you want to make the cut, using a ruler or another straight edge and a wax pencil.
- 3). Place the carbide-tipped chisel on the wax line you've drawn. Use the mallet to strike the end of the chisel all the way along the line. This will make a small groove across the slab and will be your guide.
- 4). Make an indent 1/2 inch deep at the edge of the slab where the groove meets the corner of the slab, using the chisel and mallet. This will serve as a guide for the diamond-tipped hand saw.
- 5). Pour some water into the indent you've made in the corner and use the diamond-tipped hand saw to start cutting the slab.
- 6). Move the diamond-tipped hand saw the entire way through the slab, using a fluid sawing motion. Keep adding water under the blade to ease the cutting and reduce dust.
- 7). Sand the slab's rough edges with a power sander.
