How to Measure Linear Footage on a Roll of Carpet
- 1). Examine the room or rooms that need carpet while visualizing how 12-foot widths of carpet would best fit in each room. Ensure seams will be in the least traveled or most out-of-the-way sections of the room. In remaining areas less than 12 feet wide, "share" the width with another room after cutting.
- 2). Use a measuring tape to add the total linear feet of all rooms needing carpet, adding with a calculator as you go. Write down the subtotals and grand total.
- 3). Roll out a 12-foot-wide carpet at the home improvement or carpet store. Determine the correct linear footage by simply measuring the length of the carpet.
