How to Pick a Pattern for Tile Flooring

    • 1). Decide whether you want to use tiles that are all the same size or whether you want to combine different sized tiles. Most design galleries are separated into one-tile designs, two-tile designs, and so on, and it will be easier to look at your options if you make this basic decision first. Remember that more complex designs take longer to lay, and consider how a complex pattern may affect your budget.

    • 2). Browse the design galleries located in the resources section. Click on the link for the number of different size tiles you chose to use, and consider the design options. Remember that the more staggered your design is, the harder it will be to notice if the tiles are slightly crooked, which can be a plus.

    • 3). Consider using different colored tiles to accent the pattern. Print copies of the patterns you like, and use a pencil to shade certain tiles to see how different colors would affect the overall appearance.

    • 4). Consider how the pattern will fit in with the surrounding décor. If you chose a complex pattern, remember that this will draw attention to your floor and may detract from the cabinets or furniture in the room. Consider how the colors will look against the paint or wallpaper, and adjust your tile choices to give the room continuity.
