How to Upgrade a 700M Processor
- 1). Copy any files you can't afford to lose from your Inspiron 700M to an external storage device in the event of a problem during the processor upgrade process. Turn off the 700M and disconnect any cables attached to the laptop.
- 2). Close the 700M's display screen and turn the laptop over. Slide the black battery release bar towards the right to unlock the battery. The release bar is located at the lower-left end of the 700M's case.
- 3). Pull the entire battery pack out of the 700M. Turn the 700M over again and open the display screen until the laptop is laying out flat at 180 degrees.
- 4). Locate the two silver, plastic hinge caps that are positioned at the far left and right ends on the bottom edge of the display screen. Push in the hinge caps with the edge of a flat-head screwdriver and then pull the entire plastic hinge cover off the laptop.
- 5). Remove the two keyboard screws hidden underneath the hinge cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the top edge of the keyboard toward you and place it on the 700M's palm rest.
- 6). Unplug the black ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard inside the Inspiron 700M. Remove the keyboard from the laptop.
- 7). Remove the four screws from the top of the metal heat sink unit. The heat sink is the square, silver unit located at the lower end of the motherboard directly next to the cooling fan.
- 8). Pull the heat sink out of the 700M to reveal the current processor. Locate the locking screw below the processor. Turn the screw counterclockwise to unlock the current processor from its socket.
- 9). Grab two sides of the unlocked processor and lift directly up to remove the processor from the socket. Position the new processor onto the socket and line up the pins on the processor with the holes in the socket. Push the processor down and turn the locking screw clockwise.

Replace the heat sink and its screws. Reconnect the keyboard's cable and set the keyboard back in place. Replace the two screws and push the plastic hinge cover back onto the 700M. - 11
Set the battery pack into the port on the bottom of the 700M and turn on the laptop.
