Zoom Optical Illusion Activities
- Zoomquilt is a collaborative art project on the Internet. The original concept and organization came from Nikolaus Baumgarten, though a total of 16 other individuals helped by drawing and designing frames and digitally encoding the content. The art project currently exists in several different forms. The Flash-based animation version of Zoomquilt is best viewed by those with a high-speed Internet connection. A slideshow of the still images that comprise Zoomquilt is available for slower connection speeds, and a screensaver can even be downloaded for users of Microsoft Windows.
- Designed by interaction designer Paul Neave, Neave Imagination is a Flash-based computer animation that can be viewed directly from the designer's personal website with any Flash-compatible Internet browser. The animation casts streaks of various light across the screen that correspond instantly with the movements made by your computer's mouse. This gives the viewer the ability to create their own designs, ranging from dimly lit streaks to large bursts that are wild and bright. While responding to your mouse, these streaks of light also give the appearance of zooming straight at you.
- A professor of psychology at the University of Sussex in England, Professor George Mather not only provides two examples of digitized zoom effects on his website, but he also explains in detail how they work and how they can be duplicated. Professor Mather uses what he refers to as a two-stroke or four-stroke method when creating his zoom imagery, which consists of using either two or four images in order to create the effect of a single moving image. Professor Mather's two-stroke animation method won second place as the European Conference for Visual Perception's Illusion of the Year.
- Zoomquilt 2, like its predecessor, is an online collaborative art project. Conceived once again by Nikolaus Baumgarten, Zoomquilt 2 was organized in 2007 by Markus Neidel and designed with the help of 32 other artists. The second incarnation of Zoomquilt is available as a Flash-based animated or as a screensaver for computers running Microsoft Windows.
