How to Concentrate Sulfuric Acid
- 1). Set an electric hot plate in an outdoor location with good ventilation.
- 2). Put on safety glasses and other protective gear such as the proper gloves and a rubber apron.
- 3). Half-fill a heat-resistant boorsilicate glass container with the acid solution. Place it on the hot plate.
- 4). Turn the hot plate on low and gradually increase the heat until the solution reaches the boiling point of water, or 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The water will begin to boil off as steam, leaving the sulfuric acid behind. The steam contains a minor amount of sulfuric acid in the beginning but the total increases as the solution is concentrated. Do not let the steam come into contact with any part of your body, or anything that you wish to protect.
- 5). Continue to boil the solution until you have achieved the concentration you desire. Use a reference such as Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook to determine the specific concentration of the solution based upon its weight and temperature.
