How to Build a Pocket Door Frame
- 1). Construct the rough opening of your pocket door frame starting with its header. This is the part above your head when you enter the door. Use your measuring tape to get the exact measurements of your door before the cut. Cut your wood board with your miter saw to at least 85 inches in height and twice the width of your door with an inch allowance.
- 2). Use your measuring tape to measure 80 ¾-inch of space from your finished floor moving up your wall. Mark every rough stud by detecting them with a stud finder.
- 3). Hammer a flathead nail at the center of the frame, leaving 1/8-inch of the nail protruding.
- 4). Use a chalk line to mark the floor for your side jambs. Slip the slots in the frame header end plates found right at the top of your pocket door frame. Drive the nails through the remaining holes in your end plates.
- 5). Split the fingers of your floor plate right into the split jambs of your pocket door frame. Split the jamb against your header nailer and use a hammer and a few nails to install the other split jamb midway into the pocket frame’s opening.
- 6). Use sealing stain to seal all the edges of the door panel and let it dry for at least 3 hours.
- 7). Insert door plate by screwing it on top of the door frame using a few screws and a screwdriver. This will lock the tab on the same side and complete your pocket door frame.
