How to Use Vintage Wool Blankets

    • 1). Make curtains. Long wool curtains that entirely cover a window are efficient in winter months to retain heat and keep out the cold. However, a short valance or cafe-style pair of curtains are easy to stitch and can look very chic.

    • 2). Cut the wool blankets up to use in various crafting projects, such as quilts, baby blankets, pot holders, a wool rug, or even Halloween costumes.

    • 3). Attach a piece of flannel on the back of the wool blanket to make a soft lap throw for cold winter evenings. This can be done by sewing a simple straight stitch around the edges, or using iron-on adhesive between the layers.

    • 4). Use the wool blanket to cover a pet basket or pillow during the winter months. The blanket fibers will attract pet hair, and the blanket can be easily washed. Older pets may enjoy the additional warmth it offers.

    • 5). Drape a wool blanket over a footstool, coffee table or even a dining table in the winter for instant warmth in your decorating. If there are any stains or tears, you can fold the blanket over the object you're decorating to hide the flaw.

    • 6). Garden with old wool blankets. If the blanket is not salvageable, you can tear it in shreds and compost it, as it is made of natural fibers. Or you can use it in place of black plastic for weed control--lay the blanket down in the area you wish to cover (cut in strips, if necessary) and cover with good soil.
