How to Build a Round Pen From Wood
- 1). Cut your piece of 1/2-inch dowel to the desired length (no shorter than the length of a disposable pen).
- 2). Clamp the dowel in an upright position. Use a level to ensure that the dowel is perfectly vertical.
- 3). Attach a long drill bit to an electric drill, just slightly wider in diameter than a disposable pen. You’ll need a specialty bit that is nearly as long as your disposable pen.
- 4). Center the drill over the dowel. Use the built-in level (on the back of the head of most drills) to ensure that the drill is perfectly straight.
- 5). Drill the center of the dowel to a depth 1 inch shorter than the length of the pen.
- 6). Sand the hard edges of the dowel with medium-grit sandpaper. Sand carefully around the drilled area to remove any splinters left over from drilling.
- 7). Decorate your wooden pen with a wood-burning tool. Inscribe your name or other phrase, or etch a design into the wood. Alternatively, you can paint the pen for a more finished appearance.
- 8). Wrap the disposable pen in rubber bands and insert into the dowel. Add additional rubber bands as needed to achieve a tight fit.
