The Art of Playing the Guitar - Very Old, Yet Very Young
I believe you have come across the statement that music never ages.
I would take this a step further by telling you that you, the musician, invariably tap into the agelessness of the guitar and become youthful as well.
I mean this figuratively as well as literally.
All it takes for you to become a masterful guitarist is just an excitement for music, a reasonable memory to remember what you are taught, and the uncanny ability to twiddle your wrists.
If you have these little virtues, you can be a guitar master! The fun of playing the guitar In the process of learning the guitar, you will no doubt have to do a lot of learning.
However, this is not to be compared to classroom stuff - you know the kind: dull, boring, long-stretched hours listening to the mud-faced teacher - as this will be more engaging and exciting.
Guitar lessons will serve to pique your interest as you go up the ladder, and with time you should at least have learnt the basics - which include learning how to place your fingers on the strings, the chords.
Once you have learnt these basics, you can then move on to variety, the art of using your creative genius to make beautiful combinations of chords to harp your style.
But I learnt to play the guitar way, way back...
Well then, congratulations, but you might find that since that time, there have been a couple of developments in the music world.
One of these is the use of sheet music.
If you do not get an upgrade fast, you might find yourself swimming in deep water.
I would advice that you just evaluate your previous guitar knowledge and make up for the trends by getting updated on the latest.
Of course, this won't be necessary for those who are recent learners to the guitar family.
But I am too old...
Now, now, that's the negative approach.
I suggest you try a little positive reinforcement instead, and consider the good to learning again.
For one, you get to learn new things, while having fun all through! As long as your personal interest in acquiring threes new skills is not tarnished, I really don't see why you shouldn't pick up the new skills fast! All this said and done, I will like to re-emphasize! You are never too old to learn new things! Even if you have never had any prior knowledge of the guitar before, you will only need the curiosity of a child to get you going.
The main thing is your mindset to the whole idea.
If you begin looking at guitar playing as a hobby and as recreational pastime, you will be more concerned with having fun than playing, and with this sense of ease comes the necessary attitude to pick up new things.
Keep your mind open.
The watchword is interest.
Just develop the interest and the skills will follow.
Remember, age is not the deciding factor.
In fact, it hardly matters at all.
