What are Probiotics? Simply speaking probiotics are just live microorganisms that we eat that are helpful for our digestive system.
We play host to many types, over 1000, and high numbers of microbes throughout our body and all the way through our gastrointestinal tract.
It's estimated that we had more microbes in our digestive system than the whole of the national debt.
So what do all these little guys do? Some of them produce vitamins, like Vitamin K and some of the B vitamins: biotin, B1, B3, folic acid, B6, B12.
When working correctly they are natural antibiotics, antiviral and our first defense against getting sick.
Some of them actually digest our food for us and help the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals.
We get these bacteria from many different sources.
In the first and most important is our mother's milk.
We are born completely sterile, and our mother's milk is laced with the bacteria we need to help digest food.
This is one of the reasons why bottle-fed infants have more illnesses and allergies later in life, because they don't get the healthful bacteria.
As we grow older, playing in the dirt and eating fresh foods provides more bacteria.
As society became more germaphobic, there was a rise in allergies and illnesses.
In fact studies show people who use strong sanitizers their homes and workplaces habitually become sick 2.
5 times more a year than those who clean with just water and mild soap.
But it's not all playing in the dirt that we can get our probiotics, two of the best places actually come from our food.
Fermented dairy products contain live active cultures that are known to be helpful.
These products include yogurt, kefir and certain cheeses, however they need to be organic, free of preservatives and unpasteurized.
Remember, bacteria live and die very quickly and are very sensitive to chemical interference.
Any yogurt that can sit on a shelf for more than a month does not contain many healthy bacteria.
For those of you who are lactose intolerant, fermented dairy products do not contain the lactose sugar and all but the most extremely sensitive can eat these products with no problem.
The second best place to get your probiotics is eating fresh food.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, ones that are not pasteurized in order to make a weeklong trip across country, still retained many of the bacteria from the soils.
Fresh meat from a butcher is also a good source.
These are not the bacteria that make headlines by killing people.
These are the good bacteria we need to live healthy.
So stop by your local produce stands, this is the best place to get healthy fruits and vegetables.
