    • 1). Turn the paper plate upside down to decorate the bottom of the plate like a turtle's shell. Instruct the child to use green crayons or paint, or tear tissue or construction paper into small pieces to glue onto the plate. If you opt for crayons, let the child draw a pattern over the green shell with a black crayon. Alternatively, the child could swirl brown and yellow paint in with the green paint for a more accurate look.

    • 2). Cut the turtle's legs, tail and head out of green construction paper or craft foam. Use any oval shape as a guide if you don't have stencils and do not want to draw the appendages free hand.

    • 3). Glue or tape the head, tail and legs to the undecorated side of the paper plate so they stick out.

    • 4). Draw the turtle's face with a black crayon or marker or with black paint. Glue wiggly eyes to the face if you would like.

    • 5). Make the underside of the turtle's shell out of a second paper plate if the craft is for older or more craft-oriented children. Decorate the bottom of the paper plate to look like the bottom of a turtle's shell. Put the two plates together, creating a hollow space between them. Staple the plates together, leaving an opening to stuff crumbled paper inside. Finish stapling the plates together for a three-dimensional turtle.
