How to Choose Salt & Pepper Shakers
- 1). Determine the theme of your kitchen. You want to choose a set of shakers that matches your decorating style. If you use an apple theme to decorate your kitchen, you do not want to use a rooster-and-hen shaker set, for example.
- 2). Research the size of shakers best for your needs. If your family tends to go through salt and pepper quickly, small shakers are the wrong choice. You can find large, decorative shakers to avoid having to constantly refill the shakers. Capacity sizes for salt and pepper shakers range from an ounce to 11 oz. or more. Also consider the size of the openings on the shakers to determine if the rate at which the spices come out is sufficient.
- 3). Consider the materials used to make the shakers. If you have small children, glass shakers that break more easily than those made from metal or plastic may not make a reasonable choice. While plastic shakers are least expensive, metal and glass are more elegant options.
- 4). Consider additional design options as you choose your shaker set. Salt and pepper grinders allow you to use pepper corns and large grains of sea salt for fresher-tasting salt and pepper. If you have small children, you may desire shakers with closures that are relatively secure and not easily opened to prevent spills.
