Small Things Add Up: How To Insulate Your Home For Big Savings

There are lots of small ways to save energy this winter.
And like drops in a bucket, they all add up to some pretty nice savings.
Are you ready to spend a little time and money making sure that you score big in the long run? Start by going room to room and check to see if the windows all close properly.
If there's an air leak, then you're going to feel it.
Next, check exterior doors to see if there are any gaps between the door and the frame.
Chances are that you'll need to seal or caulk a few of the windows, and that you may need to replace a gasket on at least one door.
Travel around the room on your hands and knees feeling behind the electrical outlets and then the switches.
Do you feel some cool air? Quickly block that flow by using some expanding foam sealant.
Consider raising the temperature on any refrigerator or freezer you may have outside (if you live in a cold climate) in a garage or outbuilding.
The cold ambient air temps will mean those beauties don't need to be set so low as they did in June.
Check out the filter on the front of the fridge, too, and look at the coils in the back.
Chances are they need some dusting.
Dust inhibits their ability to work properly, reducing the efficiency of those appliances.
Remember to change your air filter often.
The dirtier the filter, the harder your HVAC system has to work.
Lastly, look to your attic.
Do you know about attic door insulation? Attic door insulation is a lightweight, oversized unit that serves as a cap over the entryway between your attic and the access stairs.
Easily moved and not permanently affixed, attic door insulation is a perfect way to reduce the flow of heated air out through your house.
