How to Replace an Alternator on a 1997 Honda Accord
- 1). Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Disconnect the battery by unbolting the negative cable.
- 2). Locate the alternator at the passenger side of the engine. The adjusting bolt to loosen the belt is located just below the alternator.
- 3). Loosen the bolt to loosen the tension on the belt. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
- 4). Disconnect the wiring harness at the back of the alternator. Unbolt the stud with a socket wrench and pull the negative lead off the stud.
- 5). Loosen the two bolts holding the alternator to the mounting bracket with a socket wrench. Pull the alternator out of the engine compartment.
- 6). Position the new alternator in the mounting bracket. Tighten the two bolts to secure the alternator.
- 7). Connect the wiring harness to the back of the alternator. Secure the negative terminal to the stud. Tighten the nut over the stud to secure the wire.
- 8). Slide the belt over the pulley. Tighten the tensioner bolt under the alternator to tighten the belt.
- 9). Connect the battery. Ensure the positive cable is secure on the positive terminal.
