Omega-3, also known as Omega-3 fatty acid, is not only essential to a vegan diet, but to any diet.
As an essential nutrient, Omega-3 provides something that our bodies need, but can't produce.
Thus, we have to obtain it from external food sources which are wide-ranging.
From fish to veggies, Omega-3 can be found just about everywhere.
For instance, if you are a vegan, you will be interested in knowing that Omega-3 may be obtained from flaxseeds, walnuts, strawberries, raspberries, cauliflower, miso, squash, and several green vegetables like broccoli, romaine lettuce, brussel sprouts, collard greens, spinach, kale, and cabbage.
However, of all of the options mentioned, meat or plant-based, the richest sources of Omega-3 are flaxseeds and walnuts, flaxseeds being the richest.
Two tablespoons of flaxseeds provide 146% of the daily recommended amount of Omega-3, which far surpasses that of any of its meat-based counterparts such as salmon.
However, running in close second is walnuts, which also surpasses its meat-based counterparts.
One-fourth cup of walnuts a day provides 94% of the daily recommended amount of Omega-3.
Now the big deal about all of this is that Omega-3 fatty acids play a major role in our general health and well-being.
It improves cardiovascular health and lowers cholesterol.
Moreover, studies have also suggested that it improves immunity, wards off depression, reduces the risk of obesity and cancer, regulates inflammatory responses, and plays a major role in cognitive functioning, among other things.
As such, it can readily be observed why this nutritional wonder is such an important part of the diet of vegans and meat eaters alike.
That said, why not get a package of walnuts and/or flaxseeds right now.
If you choose the latter, be sure to store your flaxseeds in either the refrigerator or the freezer as they are quite sensitive to the elements.
Whichever source you choose know that you are eating for health and longevity for which your body will be more than grateful.
