Verbal Behavior is also known as VB, It is a method used in ABA training programs to teach a language that is based on an idea that a
meaning of a word is found in their functions. This term was framed by B.F. Skinner. Teaching a child with language delays the meaning of a word, one must first teach its function. For instance, a child with autism might say the word "computer" when they see one, but may not be able to say it when they want to use the computer or answer correctly when asked what a computer is used for.

Even though both VB and Applied Behavior Analysis are derived from philosophies vested by Skinner, they use different methods for teaching language. Few people feel that Verbal Behavior Intervention is a good addition to ABA training in Ontario. According to Skinner, language is broken into parts that have various goals. The essential part of verballanguage involves tacts, echoics, mands, and intraverbals. The term 'mand' refers to the child requesting what he needs. It means that the child is taught to use language in a functional way by verbally requesting what they desire.

ABA therapy is not necessarily used to teach child by verbally requesting what they want, but to speak it in some way; whether verbally, gesturing or signing. In the ABA method of teaching language, children are taught to label or name things. Let us take an
example, if they will learn to say the word "pen" when they see a pen. While they are not essentially taught the function of the pen,they may not be able to use this word in a sentence. As the focus of VB is to teach functional communication, it accompanies the ABA approach.

€Skills Flourished Using Verbal Behavior
Verbal Behavior intervention works basically on developing communication skills, along with expressive and receptive language across the verbal operants such as mand (requesting), tact (labeling), intraverbal (conversational skills) and echoics (vocal imitation). Learning with operants also includes working on gross and fine motor imitation, listener (following instructions) and textual(writing).

€Enhance Comprehensive Language Skills
Verbal Behavior is a strong approach that can be integrated with other teaching approaches such as Discrete Trial Training (DTT) or Natural Environment Training (NET). Whereas, congregating the total operants of Verbal Behavior across both DTT and NET may contribute to enhance comprehensive language skills. Child's require the functional skills along with verbal operants to raise verbal behavior. A child without strong conversational skills may not be able to interact properly in response to their peer's verbal behavior, which may fade further interactions.

It also capitalizes on the child's own enthusiasm, teaching the child to communicate what he wishes. This aptitude to request can trim
down challenging behavior which used to function as a means for obtaining the desired thing.
