How to Mix Your Voice Into a Song

    • 1). Connect your microphone. USB microphones, and microphones with 1/8-inch plugs, can connect directly to your computer. Traditional microphones will require a converter for the XLR plug.

    • 2). Open your DAW. Tap on the microphone to make sure there is a signal. If you are using a laptop, you may see a signal register on the DAW’s sound meter but not hear a sound. This is usually because laptops use half-duplex sound cards, which can record or play sound, but not both at the same time. In that case, you’ll need a full-duplex USB sound card or other external audio interface.

    • 3). Load the song with which you wish to work into track one of the DAW's sequencer.

    • 4). Push "Record" on the second track in the sequencer and sing. Different DAWs will host the record button in different places. Look for the red circle. If you can’t find the "Record" button, consult the literature for your particular DAW.

    • 5). Press "Stop" when you are done recording. On most DAWs that is the black square button.

    • 6). Press "Play" to hear the track. You may need to adjust the volume faders on each track to get the mix balanced so one track does not overpower the other.
