Flouride in Well Water - Its Dangerous If Its at High Levels and it is Not Alone
In many rural communities it is common to have flouride in well water.
And in a number of them the flouride level is dangerously high.
Over 2000 carcinogenic chemicals have been found in tap water in many different localities across this country.
Many of them were discovered in city and town taps.
But a certain number were from private wells.
So you are not safe from these, even though you live in a beautiful, natural above-ground setting.
We find flouride in well water because it's a common natural element found in minerals, underground rocks and some soils .
As water washes across these, some trace of flouride will wash off and dissolve in the water.
When that water finds its way down into the ground water where your well sits you will get fouride in your tap.
Now, a certain amount is OK.
Just how much is debated.
In fact, as you are aware, there are some people who would say any level of flouride in drinking water is unhealthy, even dangerous.
But a large group of scientists agree the optimum level of fluoride in tap water is 0.
7 mg/L to 1.
2 mg/L.
Notice the range.
The scientists say where you are likely to drink large amounts of water, such as hot and humid areas, then the lower level is optimal.
But in places where you would normally drink less, such as a cold location, a higher level is recommended.
But having said that, flouride in well water will be dangerous if it is above 4.
0 mg/L.
In fact when people will drink over a long period from a well containing this much flouride they run the risk of contracting a dangerous, though rare, bone ailment known as skeletal fluorosis.
So you need to check at a certified state laboratory if you have flouride in well water.
But actually, that is not enough.
Well water is natural, but is not necessarily pure.
Chemicals from the farms around your home will run off the farm in rain water and small streams.
All of it will eventually find its way down into your ground water reserves.
So you need to find out if there are dangerous chemicals in your well water, as well as your level of flouride.
Fortunately there are water purification systems available that will treat your well water.
They need not be expensive.
But you do need to make sure you don't install a system that depends on the reverse osmosis system, or distillation.
Reverse osmosis was developed to remove minerals from water.
And it does that quite well, which means it strips out the healthy natural minerals you must have in your water and diet, like calcium and magnesium.
But this (generally expensive) system does not remove anything with a molecular structure smaller than water.
And since almost all chemicals and harmful contaminants like bacteria are smaller than that, they pass merrily through these filters with the water.
Distillation sounds good, but its a method that depends on temperature.
And there are plenty of chemicals and minerals with a lower boiling point than water, which distillation does not get rid of.
So look around on the Internet for a set of filters and purifiers which will, together, remove the contaminants from your well.
