Review of the Epson PictureMate - PM270
The Epson PictureMate (PM270) is a portable printer that prints fine quality prints in less than 37 seconds - the perfect printer to take on your holidays. The PM270 purely focuses on simple 4x6" printing with exemplary print quality, although it isn't the most portable of printers that contains a lunchbox-style handle on top.
The case comes with a 3.6in LCD screen - necessary inclusion for photo editing. The case also offers a multi-card reader that supports SD cards, Memory Sticks, Compact Flash disks and a PictBridge port that provides direct printing from a compatible digital camera or mobile phone.
The Epson ink cartridges are bundled with 150 sheets of paper while the print per page costs is slightly expensive than normal, the PM270's consumable price seems just fine adequate.
The PM270's navigation menu is done using six soft-touch buttons and a five-way navigation pad. The printer also offers basic photo editing features, such as rotation, red-eye reduction, and you can adjust the brightness and saturation. The cropping feature would have been an advantage, especially because there is a five-way navigational pad.
The direct photo printing method is a simple process - connect a camera or insert a memory card, and the PM270 will display the photos in a 4x4 grid. The device is slightly on the slower side to load the thumbnails, but once selected, the printing process is quick and simple.
The biggest drawback is that the PM270 doesn't come with a battery - you need to buy it separately. There are also some disadvantages to the colour printing - it does not provide the user with any quality options, making it difficult to ascertain the resolution. The printing speeds for borderless 4x6in photos were 35sec and for more detailed images it was 49sec. Printing images from the computer, the photos were printed in 29.8sec in 'speed' mode, slowing to 1min 13sec in the highest quality mode. The PM270's print quality is perfect enough for those users who need a quick photo print on the go.
