Winter in Texas is mild. The days are warm, but not hot, and the nights are cool without frost. Occasionally Texas will experience winter weather in the extremes, but not often enough to worry gardeners about their flowers. Certain flowers found in Texas appreciate and bloom with the cooler winter weather. These types of flowers do not live long in the heat and need the comfortable climate provided by a mild Texas winter to bloom.

    Pansies

    • Pansies are a popular winter flower in Texas because they don't like the heat. Pansies grow best when the daytime temperature is mild and the evening temperature is cool. Pansies are available in a variety of colors, including purple, yellow, white and combination colors. Pansies grow quickly and can be grown in gardens or in flower pots. Pansies need only an inch of water each week. To keep your pansies pretty and for optimum growth, remove faded flowers from the plant to make room for new flowers to grow.

    Violas

    • Violas do not like hot weather and will wilt and die in the heat of summer. Because Texas winters are mild, these flowers grow well during the winter months in the Texas climate. Winter weather in Texas does encounter an occasional frost, so violas need to be covered to protect them from the cold. Violas bloom in a variety of colors such as yellow, white, violet, blue and apricot. Violas are native to the southern hemisphere and are often seen growing wildly in Texas. Violas should grow even if they are neglected. They need only be watered when the weather is particularly dry.

    Geraniums

    • Texas winters are good for growing geraniums because of their lack of tolerance for hot weather. Certain types of geraniums, such as Martha Washington and Regal geraniums, only grow when the nighttime temperature is below 60 degrees. Geraniums are also prone to growing in any type of soil, adapting well to their surroundings and continuing to grow with the proper care. Geraniums need sunlight to grow and cannot be watered too much or too often or they will drown. Geraniums are found in many colors, including shades of red, violet and purple.
