How to Make Tabs for a Tab Top Valance

    • 1). Cut a 3 1/2-inch by 9-inch piece of fabric or a 9-inch piece of ribbon or trim for each tab.

    • 2). Fold each piece of fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and pin. Sew down the pinned side, 1/4 inch from the cut edge. Disregard this step if using ribbon or trim.

    • 3). Turn the tabs right side out. Smooth each tab on the ironing board with the seam centered on the back of the strip and press neatly. Disregard this step if using ribbon or trim.

    • 4). Fold over 1/2 inch to the back on one end of each tab and press. Bring the other end of the tab over to meet the folded end, and pin. Sew across the width of the tab close to each raw edge where the ends meet.

    • 5). Position tabs at each end and spaced evenly along the back side of the top of the valance. Place the side of each tab with the raw ends against the valance fabric and make sure all tabs extend equally above the top. Sew the tabs to the valance.
