What Are Camis?

    History

The origin of the word "camisole" dates back to the early 1800s, based on the French word "camisola." From its inception, the camisole was an undergarment; in fact, it was worn under the traditional undergarment of the time---the corset---presumably to protect the corset-wearer's skin from the pinching of the corset's buttons. Over time, the camisole became worn over the bra (which replaced the corset), presumably to hide the buttons, buckles and lines of the brassiere. Though the official abbreviation date of "camisole" to "cami" is unknown, it can be safely attributed to the late 20th century when abbreviations became popular with the influx of technological communication.

    Identification

Camis, or camisoles, are identified by their waist-length and their thin over-the-shoulder straps, commonly referred to in fashion as "spaghetti straps." Camis tend to be form-fitting, in keeping with their undergarment origin, but they may also be slightly loose, longer and have wider straps with adornments, in keeping with their growing classification as a women's fashion accessory and staple. As of 2011, camis are generally found in the lingerie section of department stores, though many designers include camis as part of their standard line found with other top-worn garments, such as blouses and sweaters.

    Functions

The cami is nothing if not versatile. Still worn as an undergarment, the cami can hide bra or girdle (modern corset) lines under a light or sheer top and/or act as a girdle to enhance the female figure. In addition to these modern usages based on the traditional, the cami is currently considered a staple accessory in women's fashion. Worn as a layer, the cami adds a touch of detail under a professional blazer or casual sweater, while also enhancing or hiding cleavage. Remove the outer layer, and your cami can go from day to cocktail wear.

    Considerations

    • When shopping for a camisole, consider your intent. As an undergarment, it should be sleek with few details and cover the lines of your bra or girdle. As an accessory, it should do the same but have the added feature of some detail peeking out of your outer layer to give the impression that it is, in fact, a layer, and not an undergarment. Be particularly cautious wearing a cami for business attire, whether for an interview or typical work-day; keep it layered and minimal.
