Children and Creative Genius - Something To Think About
Both Walt Disney and Albert Einstein agreed that the curious imaginative mind of a child was paramount to creativity and innovation.
Who could disagree with that, not only because they said it, but also because it makes sense.
Wouldn't it be nice if all of us well into adulthood could occasionally tap into the child-like mind? Sure it would, and since I do it all the time, I'd like to discuss with you some interesting thoughts.
You see, I run a think tank which is online, and I realize the value in this type of thinking you see.
It's often been stated that 6-years olds are all genius level creative thinkers, I've seen that studies on this, in fact a few of them are quite famous.
At MIT the first thing the engineering students are asked is write down in 3-minutes as many things as possible that you can use a pencil for.
It's a good test, perhaps you'd score high, as I did.
Most don't do so well, that's unfortunate.
Basically, I maxed out, I couldn't write fast enough even abbreviating.
Last year I was discussing all this with an acquaintance and he told me a little story "I just haven't lost my creativity and talents, probably because as a child I was curious, stubborn and intelligent.
My mother once told me that when I was two, I couldn't read and I liked birds, I was looking through a book with my grandmother about birds and one of the pictures showed a bird, but had a name of another, but similar, bird.
I said it was the other bird and my grandmother tried to correct me.
I wouldn't listen and they looked it up in another books what the correct name of the bird was.
" It turns out he was right all along! These things happen all the time, perhaps you have kids and have seen these sparks of intelligence? It's just amazing.
Teachers often tell me stories like this as they are blown away by their students at times.
So, it's not just creativity that kids are good at, their minds are agile, fluid, and those that are ultra-curious only need a dash of creativity to really take it to the next level.
Imagine if you still had such an agile mind as you grew older.
What could you do with it? Well, what if I told you that you already did, and all you really needed to do was reunite with that child mind in you? You can you know, all you need to do is suspend some of that belief system that has boxed your mind in for a little while as you brain storm your brain to the next level.
Indeed, I'd like you to please consider all this and think on it.
