Problems With PC Devices

    • PCs require many different devices to work together to run programs and produce output such as the video and sound that users experience. Devices inside PCs can be affected by a range of problems that may interfere with their function. Hardware that is not able to function optimally can lead to slow PC performance and a host of other issues.

    File Fragmentation

    • File fragmentation is a problem that affects computer hard drives. Fragmentation occurs when data used for a certain purpose, such as the data necessary to run a certain program, is split up and saved on different parts of a hard drive. When the hard drive attempts to access the data, it must search for and read pieces on different parts of the disk, which can make it take longer to access the data. Over time, fragmented files can bog down a computer. Disk defragmentation is a process where the hard drive reorganizes data to get rid of file fragmentation. Defragmenting regularly can help prevent slowdowns due to file fragmentation.

    Noise

    • Computer devices sometimes create repetitive noises that become an irritation. Computer devices with moving parts, especially fans, are likely to cause excess noise. Most computers have a large fan mounted over the central processing unit, and they may also have fans on the graphics card, inside the power supply and mounted on the sides of the case to create air circulation. Excessive fan noise is more likely when fans are clogged with dust, hair and other obstructions; cleaning fans can reduce noise. Tightening all the screws on a PCs case can also reduce noise.

    Heat

    • When computer devices run, they consume electricity and create heat. A certain amount of heat generation is normal, but if devices get too hot, they may malfunction or become permanently damaged. Proper case cooling such as with case fans and a CPU fan can help dissipate heat. Avoiding taxing processes such as running many applications at the same time and running graphically intense processes like computer games can also reduce heat.

    Driver Software

    • Driver software or device drivers are required for certain PC devices to function. If drivers are not installed, or the wrong drivers are installed, it can cause devices to fail. Improper driver software can potentially cause a computer to crash, freeze or produce a blue error screen. Many PC devices come with a driver CD with basic drivers. Reverting back to basic drivers on the original driver CD may solve problems caused by drivers installed from other sources.
