How to Drill a Tile

    • 1). Measure the exact location of the hole on your tile and mark it with a permanent marker. Be precise and double check the measurements before indicating the location of the future hole. Marking the spot with a small x sign will help you be more precise.

    • 2). Put a piece of masking tape over the marked spot. Make sure to transfer the exact place for the hole on the tape, again using the marker. The tape will help you keep the drill firmly in your hand and not slip on the glazed surface of the ceramic tile. It will also help prevent scratches and dents around the hole.

    • 3). Put a carbide tip in your power drill. Remember to choose the right size drill bit you need, depending on how big your hole should be.

    • 4). Place the tip of the drill bit on the masking tape, on the exact spot marked with the marker. Make sure you are standing in a firm, secure position and that you are holding the drill bit perfectly perpendicular to the tile.

    • 5). Turn on the power drill on a low speed setting. Drill slowly and steadily, applying a mild amount of pressure onto the tile. When you feel that you have penetrated all the way through the tile, lighten the pressure so you will have a clean hole at the back of the drywall, which is important if you want to install a fastener.
