How to Replace the Brake Shoes on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

    • 1). Place a jack under the frame directly in front of the driver side rear tire. Jack the Explorer up and place a jack stand under the frame. Lower the Explorer onto the jack stand.

    • 2). Remove the lug nuts using a tire iron, and then pull the wheel off the brake drum.

    • 3). Place the brake drum puller over the brake drum. The three fingers on the puller go behind the brake drum, and the threaded post goes in the center of the brake drum. Turn the puller using a socket and ratchet to pull the brake drum off the wheel hub.

    • 4). Remove the springs that secure the brake shoes onto the wheel hub using a pair of pliers. Remove the brake shoes; place the new brake shoes onto the wheel hub and secure them using the springs and pliers.

    • 5). Place the brake drum onto the wheel hub and hammer it onto the wheel hub using a rubber mallet.

    • 6). Place the wheel back onto the Explorer and secure it using the lug nuts and tire iron.

    • 7). Jack the Explorer up, remove the jack stand and then lower it to the ground. Double-check the lug nuts to ensure they are tight.

    • 8). Repeat the process on the passenger side rear brake.
