    • 1). Turn off the circuit breaker or unscrew the fuse at the main panel that controls the wall switch and fixture. Tag or otherwise mark the panel to alert others of the work being done.

    • 2). Remove the switch cover screw using a flathead screwdriver. Remove the cover from the wall.

    • 3). Test the switch terminals with an electrical voltage tester to verify that the power is off. Place one probe on the upper terminal screw and the other on the lower terminal screw to conduct the test.

    • 4). Remove the two switch bracket screws that secure the switch in the electrical box with the appropriate screwdriver. Turn the screws counterclockwise.

    • 5). Pull the switch out from the box as far as the wires allow.

    • 6). Disconnect the electrical wires from the old switch by loosening the two terminal screws and the ground post screw with a screwdriver.

    • 7). Cut off the looped ends of the switch wires and the bare copper ground wire using wire cutters.

    • 8). Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the insulated switch wires using wire strippers.

    • 9). Connect the black wire from the timer switch to the black hot wire from the switch box with a wire nut. Turn the wire nut clockwise by hand to tighten it.

      Connect the white wire from the timer switch to the white neutral wire from the switch box with a wire nut.

      Connect the green grounding wire from the timer switch to the bare copper wire from the switch box using a wire nut.

      Wrap electrical tape in a clockwise direction around each of the wire nut connections. Overlap the tape from the wire nut onto the wires.

      Push the wiring and the timer switch into the electrical box. Attach the timer switch to the box using the bracket screws. Tighten it by turning clockwise.

      Install the timer cover plate and secure cover screws with a screwdriver.

    • 15

      Restore the electrical power to the timer and fixture circuit. Remove tags or markings from the panel.

    • 16

      Adjust the timer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
