Three- to 4-inch white, red, pink and green cymbidium flowers grow on a tall spike from the above-ground bulb. Buds are often visible from summer through fall. According to the Cymbidium Society of America, these buds develop as a result of a series of 55 degrees Fahrenheit nights and warm days of at least 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
During the spring, summer and fall growing season, cymbidium orchid plants require at least 12 hours of sunlight each day for flowering. As the buds begin to show, blooms benefit by shading the plants for best color. Polypropylene shade cloth of 55 percent density is ideal as a shade cover for potted cymbidium.
In the summer, water cymbidium orchids two to three times per week; once per week or less in the winter is sufficient. - There are two types of dendrobium orchids; nobile type and phalaenopsis type.dendrobium kingianum, orchidee image by photosite from Fotolia.com
There are two types of dendrobium orchids: nobile type and phalaenopsis type.
Nobile hybrids are deciduous plants, losing leaves in the winter. This dormancy lasts about two months, during which time no water or feed is required. When new buds start to appear, resume watering gradually.
The most familiar nobile type is Yamamoto Dendrobium hybrid. Up to 50 pink, yellow or white flowers, bloom for up to three weeks. Provide a sunny window, adequate circulation and cool temperature to low 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a month to spur the blooming.
The Phalaenopsis type of Dendrobium is easily mistaken for the species of the same name. Allow the potting medium to dry completely before re-watering. Place plant in a sunny window, with temperatures of 65 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 to 70 percent humidity for a display of 20 or more flowers. Some of the hybrids might flower twice annually. - Many hybrid oncidium orchids bloom up to three times annually.Oncidium Leucochilum image by gometal from Fotolia.com
Oncidiums have above-ground bulbs with yellow, gold, or red 1-inch flowers on a 2- to 3-foot spike. The most common variety is called the "dancing lady." Depending on the variety, flowering can occur at any time of year, but is generally more profuse in the fall and spring. Many hybrids bloom up to three times annually. To initiate the flower spikes, place the plant in an area where the night temperatures fall below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Water orchids about every five to seven days, keeping humidity to 40 percent or greater. - Phalaenopsis, the moth orchid, is the most common orchid found as a houseplant.orchid. phalaenopsis orchid image by L. Phalaenopsis, the moth orchid, is the most common orchid found as a houseplant because the arching flower spike will last up to three months. Three- to 4-inch white, pink, yellow, striped and spotted orchids flower profusely under everyday conditions in your home on an east window sill. They generally flower continuously from April through June. To encourage a second bloom, cut back the flower spike to just above where the first bud emerged on the original flower spike.
Phalaenopsis, prefer temperatures ranging between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Water plants once per week with warm water, allowing it to drain out the bottom into a tray filled with pea gravel to provide humidity for the plant roots.
