How to Store Wooden Furniture
- 1). Prepare furniture for storage. Wrap old blankets or furniture pads around furniture, especially furniture legs and spots that are prone to being scratched. Place charcoal inside drawers to help fight off moisture and mildew. Place plastic drop cloths over entire pieces of furniture. This will keep dust and dirt from layering and falling onto the furniture.
- 2). Store wooden furniture in a temperature-controlled utility shed or garage. Cover the floor with thick plastic sheeting. Place the furniture on top of raised platforms made from wooden boards to keep furniture off the floor, away from where moisture or dust accumulates. Use wide wooden boards 12 feet to 16 feet in size, depending on what fits within the storage area, and place two cinder blocks underneath the boards at each end to raise the wood. Make sure the boards are properly balanced.
- 3). Consider renting a commercial temperature-controlled storage facility to store large pieces or large amounts of wooden furniture. Disassemble what can be taken apart safely. For example, remove a wooden bed headboards and wrap in a quilt to protect against scratching or dents. Take out all screws, nuts and bolts to a bed and place these pieces in a plastic bag for safe keeping. Tie the plastic bag to the bed frame.
- 4). Remove wooden table legs and wrap them in sheets for protection. Use padded covers to protect wooden arms of sofas and chairs in general. Make sure the padded covers are breathable cotton and not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and promotes mold and mildew growth.
- 5). Stack small wooden items with flat surfaces, such as end tables, on top of one another once they are wrapped to make room for bigger pieces of furniture. Lean wooden headboards against a wall once they are wrapped and protected. Make sure the floor is coated with plastic sheeting throughout the storage facility so that no moisture can get onto the furniture from below.
