Amsterdam Dance Event 2005 - Fourth Day Report

It's hard to believe that the Amsterdam Dance Event is over, it feels like I arrived just yesterday. While it will be a couple of days before I post all of the pictures, there is time to post a quick update about today's events.

Panels:
Today was Dutch DJ day and there were seemingly millions of up and coming Dutch DJs and producers in the Felix Meritus. Each panel I stopped in for was completely full and standing room only.

Producers Futureshock, Derrick May and Dave Clark were all on panels sharing their experiences and giving advice freely and openly. I greatly respect them for donating their time and stories to the next generation.

The Addictive TV showcase was quite exceptional as well. To call that crew DJs or VJs seems like a misnomer or understatement. I guess the term coined by Valentin - Media Jockey - comes to mind. The ATV crew work the Pioneer DVJ-X1s like James Zabiela works the CDJ-100s. It really is hard to explain how and what they do - they reedit video clips and sequence them in software to correspond to a new audio track. For example, their video version of the mashup for Blondie vs the Doors "Rapture Riders" creates a music video where there wasn't one - there doesn't exist a recorded video performance of the Doors doing "Riders on the Storm," but that didn't stop the crew from creating one from old footage and looping it in a way that looks like Jim Morrison is singing the song. The perfect flow of the video and music has to be seen to be believed.

Watch out for these guys to usher in a new generation of music and video fusion

Buzz Records:

Schumacher "Heat It Up" - Remember that white label of Wee Papa Girls that I mentioned a few days back? This is it and its HOT!
Bob Sinclar "Love Generation" - heard this every night I was here
Rooster and Sammy Peralta "Shake It" (Steve Angello Mix) - been playing this for months and heard it several times this week
DJ Dero "Illusion"

No quotes today so here is an overheard conversation:

Person 1: See you in Miami
Person 2: I don't think I will be going
Person 1: No one else can do it like you do
Person 2: After the state I came back in, no one else wants to do it like I do

Parties:

There were so many to choose from: Stonebridge and Gadjo at Panama, Armin Van Buuren and Harry Lemon on the boat cruise, Johan Gielen and Dumonde at Kingdom Veneu, Mync Project and Martijn Ven Telden (MTV) at the Manson. I remembered the fabulous time I had at the Milk and 2 Sugars (MN2S) party in Miami and decided to go check out their event at Escape. Anyways, after two days of house, I figured why not make it a trifecta.

Doors opened at 11pm and when I arrived a 11:30pm, DJ Raymundo already had a pretty full dancefloor. When I think of dutch DJs - the trance guys Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto come to mind but after tonight's performances by DJ Raymundo and DJ Roog (Hardsoul), I realized there is much more to Dutch DJs than trance. Raymundo was an incredible opening DJ, which can be quite difficult to do. Setting the vibe and starting the energy can sometimes by more difficult than playing prime time. Full Intention came on next and exceeded my high expectations (they have produced many of my favorite remixes.) The energy just kept increasing as they reassembled the tracks cutting back and forth between multiple copies and giving them their own unique spin (sorry for the horrible pun.) The round of applause for Full Intention ushered in DJ Roog who worked the EQ like FI had done the decks. There is something to be said for a DJ who can almost create a new song by shaping the sonic textures of a prerecorded track. DJ Roog is a local favorite and its easy to see why.

Seamus Haji was up next and started off with a bang - almost literally. I was beginning to feel overwhelmed by some overagressive security guards, so I took a break and ran upstairs to the lounge where Axwell was getting funky with some groovy discoflavored house. I looked at my watch and realized that it was close to 4am. I wish I had booked a later flight home so I could have stayed longer. This is the last time I take an early morning flight home after an international trip.
