Cheap Car Window Repair
- 1). Look at the damage through a magnifying glass. If you catch a chip in the glass before it turns into a crack, you'll save yourself hundreds of dollars. Not only will longer cracks require you to eventually replace the windshield, but they'll also attract dirt and other road grime that can become a safety hazard.
- 2). Buy an inexpensive windshield repair kit. Adhesive injection kits cost about $10 and are available at most large department stores or auto supply shops. Keep it simple and choose an easy-to-use kit. More expensive and complicated kits exist, but they are no better than the cheap ones.
- 3). Clean and dry your windshield. Injection kits won't work with wet windows or in extreme temperatures. So unless the weather is perfect outside, pull your car into a garage for the repair.
- 4). Peel the backing film from one of the adhesive strips that came with your kit. Center it over the chip in the windshield and apply it to the glass. Next, use a blunt object to burnish it and remove the remaining film. Take the kit's plastic adapter, hold it vertically and stick it to the film. Burnish again.
- 5). Take the cap off of the adhesive syringe and connect it to the adapter. Make sure you don't drip any of the adhesive onto your car's paint. Hold the syringe steady with one hand and pull the handle back with the other until it stops. This removes air from the crack or chip and allows adhesive to seep in. Hold it for one minute.
- 6). Let go of the handle to force the adhesive into the chip. Repeat as necessary until the chip is filled with the adhesive. Remove everything except a bubble of adhesive in the chip itself. Clean up any extra glue around the damage with an alcohol-dampened towel.
- 7). Let the windshield dry for a few hours. When the adhesive has hardened, remove any extra adhesive from the crack with a sharp razor blade. For a little bit of effort and a whole lot less money than you would spend on new glass, you'll have a windshield that looks good as new.
