    No Soap

    • Rinse all cookware in hot water before seasoning. According to Lodge Cast Iron, you should never use soap to wash your cookware before or after seasoning. Remove hard stains by boiling water inside the pan and removing the cooked-on food after it softens.

    Oil

    • In the book "Things Cooks Love: Implements, Ingredients, Recipes" authors Marie Simmons and Sur La Table explain that the best types of oil for seasoning cookware are canola oil and peanut oil. This is due to their high smoking point.

    The Oven

    • There are two ways to season cookware. What's Cooking in America reports that the oven method requires rubbing a thin layer of oil into the inside surface of the pan. Then place cookware upside down in the oven and bake it for approximately a half to a full hour at a temperature of 300 to 500 degrees. Afterward, allow the cookware to cool at room temperature.

    The Stove Top

    • The stove top offers another way to season cookware. The Fire Pie Trail Store recommends coating the pan surface with a thin layer of oil and placing it on the stove top above a low flame for approximately an hour. Afterward, remove from the flame and allow it to cool.

    Storage

    • According to Fantes.com, you should also place a light coating of oil on seasoned cookware before storing it. Place cookware that you don't use often in a plastic bag for safe keeping after the applying oil.
