It is possible to learn to improve your vocal range.
Most people believe their voice is just what it is and it cannot be changed.
This is just not true.
The upper and lower ranges can be pushed gently over time.
Vocal exercises can improve range and tone.
The voice will need to be exercised just like a muscle.
The more it's used the stronger it gets.
To begin your voice must be warmed up.
This is especially important when trying to reach outside of your comfortable range.
Straining the vocal chords can cause damage.
Like with physical exercise, you must stretch before working out or it is possible to pull a muscle.
Start in your current range going up and down notes to warm up.
In order to do this you need to know what your current range is.
The human voice has a natural range of eight to twelve notes.
The piano is a good choice with its clear sound.
A guitar can also be used but it is easier on piano.
Play a note and listen very carefully.
Next try to reproduce the note you play on the piano.
It may be a good to have someone else listening as well to be sure you are reproducing accurately.
Start with the middle C key and keep going up one note at a time until you reach the highest you are comfortable singing.
Do the same in the opposite direction.
It is important to know how to sing properly.
Proper posture has to be kept.
Shoulders should be back and down.
The head should be held in a natural position with neck elongated.
Imagine a string pulling from the top of your head and draw yourself up.
The neck and shoulders need to be relaxed and chin up.
All this is to give your body room to draw in the breath necessary to sing properly.
You will need to do some breathing exercises.
This helps with learning to control the breath, which is essential in singing.
Place your hand on your abdomen and breathe in.
As you do, you should feel the area just under the ribs expanding.
Now exhale slowly and feel it contract.
This is your diaphragm and it controls the amount of air coming into the lungs and leaving the body.
Breathe in slowly feeling diaphragm expand, pull it in slightly and continue drawing in breath to the bottom of the lungs.
Exhale slowly emptying lungs keeping the diaphragm expanded.
It should decrease naturally after they are empty.
Practice this until it occurs naturally when singing.
To improve the vocal range you will simply need to sing.
Get comfortable in your normal range then choose to sing a song just above it and then just below it.
Spend a lot of time recording and listening to yourself.
Practice scales consistently each day.
Never strain to reach a note.
Your mouth and throat should be open and relaxed.
This along with proper posture allows you to sing in full voice and allows for breath control.
Practice daily and the range will improve.
