    • 1). Determine if the appliance is operating within the limits of the pressure relief valve by viewing the data tag on the relief valve and comparing it to the readings on the gauges of the boiler or water heater.

    • 2). Lift the test lever on the relief valve and allow the relief to discharge for 2 to 3 seconds to clear the valve of any debris.

    • 3). Release the lever and observe the discharge pipe to confirm the water stops discharging after 2 to 3 seconds.

    • 4). Use a hammer or large wrench to tap the relief valve with moderate force if the valve continues to discharge water. Repeat Steps 2 and 3.

    • 5). Shut down the heating appliance including the fresh water supply if the relief valve continues to discharge water.

    • 6). Remove the failed relief valve and replace it with a new relief valve according to the manufacturer's instructions.
