How to Reset & Clear the Trouble Engine Lights on a 2002 Cavalier

    • 1). Turn off the ignition and place the Cavalier in park (or first gear if it's a manual transmission). Apply the emergency brake. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position but do not start the engine.

    • 2). Plug the scan tool into the diagnostic port located just underneath the dashboard, directly below the steering column.

    • 3). Power on the scan tool and navigate to the "trouble codes" menu. Select "read current codes" and note the readout on the scan tool.

    • 4). Write down the code that caused the MIL to illuminate. This is useful diagnostic information.

    • 5). Select "clear all codes," then see if the MIL turns off. Start the vehicle to ensure that the MIL is not illuminated.

    • 6). Fix the original problem that caused the MIL to illuminate. You can use the information from the scan tool to assist in diagnosing and repairing the problem. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to clear the MIL once more after the problem has been repaired.
