    • 1). Put a fresh bulb in the old, existing fixture. Turn off power to the old fixture, flipping the circuit at the main circuit box of the house. Make sure it is off, testing it at the wall switch.

    • 2). Remove the light bulb, then remove the fixture, by taking out the mounting screws that hold it to the ceiling around the base. Lower the fixture enough to get at the wire connections between the fixture and the ceiling electrical box. Disconnect the wires by unscrewing the wire nuts holding them together, and pull down the light. The wires from the ceiling electrical box should be left exposed and hanging.

    • 3). Bring the new light fixture up to the ceiling electrical box. Use wire nuts to connect the black wire from the fixture to the black wire from the box, twisting the nut over both ends of the wires at once and then wrapping a piece of electrical tape around it. Do the same with the white wires from the fixture and the box.

    • 4). Twist the copper ground wire from the electrical box around the green ground screw that’s inside the housing of the new fixture, and tighten the green screw.

    • 5). Press the fixture to the box, while tucking in the wire connections. Use the screws that came with your fixture to screw it to the box, lining up the standard holes between the fixture and the box.

    • 6). Put a new bulb in the fixture and turn on the power.
