How to Close Computer Backdoors

    • 1). Disconnect your computer from the Internet immediately.

    • 2). Change all passwords to encryption software and to password-protected sensitive files on your computer, or add passwords to those files. Assume that until the backdoor is scrubbed, your keystrokes will be read remotely by the attacker. Therefore, create the new passwords on a password-protected document in another computer. Then use a flash drive to port the password document to the infected computer. The new passwords can be copied and pasted to the infected computer without being read by the attacker.

    • 3). Do not open any of the newly protected sensitive files on your infected computer until the backdoor program has been removed. Use another computer to change passwords to email, bank accounts, credit-card accounts and other important online accounts.

    • 4). Standard virus scanners and spyware removers can find and remove some backdoor programs. Virus scanners include Symantec Norton Antivirus, AVG Anti-Virus, McAfee VirusScan and Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Spyware removers include Spybot, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, and SpyCop.

    • 5). Ask a knowledgeable computer professional to examine your system if you are unsure whether your computer system is still compromised. Some of the corruptions of files, registry and other deep-level components of your operating system and application software may be difficult or impossible for anyone but an expert to detect and unscramble.
