How to Change a Speedometer Gear
- 1). Place the wheel chocks around one of the vehicle's rear wheels. Place the jack under the front axle and jack up the vehicle enough so you can crawl under it. Place the jack stand under the axle and lower the vehicle onto the stand.
- 2). Crawl under the vehicle and place the drain pan under the spot where the speedometer cable attaches to the transmission. Wrap the cloth around the cable fitting and unscrew it from the transmission housing with your hand. If the fitting sticks, twist it gently with the pliers.
- 3). Remove the speedometer gear housing bolts with the wrench and wiggle the housing free from the transmission case. If the housing sticks, insert the tip of the screwdriver between the housing and the transmission case and gently pry it free, using care not to damage the O-ring seal on back of the housing. Transmission fluid will run from the opening when the housing is removed, so be prepared to work quickly.
- 4). Remove the old speedometer gear from the housing, with your fingers, taking note of the gear's orientation in the housing and install the new gear in the same position. Reinstall the housing on the transmission case, being sure the O-ring seats properly against the casing, and secure it in place with the bolts. Insert the speedometer cable into the housing and tighten the fitting in place with your fingers. Top off the transmission with new fluid.
