How to Make Miniature Terrariums
- 1). Clean the inside of a 20-ounce plastic soda bottle using soap and water. Turn the bottle upside to allow it to drain and dry. If the bottle still has a label on it, remove and discard it. If the lid is not on the bottle at this point, replace it.
- 2). Cut of the top 1/3 of the bottle using a utility knife or a pair of scissors.
- 3). Fill the bottom of the bottle using aquarium gravel. You want a 1-inch layer. Cover the gravel with 1 inch of potting soil.
- 4). Plant two to three seeds in the potting soil. Press your finger into the soil to make a hole and then place the seed in it. Cover the seeds with the soil. If you prefer, you can skip the seeds and use starter plants. When choosing seeds or plants, consider ones that do well in heat and humidity, such as grasses.
- 5). Water your seeds according to the type of plant you are growing. Different plants require different amounts of water.
- 6). Squeeze the bottom of the bottle and insert it into the top part of the bottle. Push the top down about an inch to secure it in place. The bottom part of the bottle will sit inside the top part of the bottle and it will fit snugly.
- 7). Set the aquarium near a window where it will get natural sunlight. However, do not leave it in direct sunlight because the closed environment will heat up rapidly and direct sunlight will raise the temperatures too high.
- 8). Adjust the water level in the terrarium as necessary. If there is too much moisture, remove the lid for a few hours to allow some water to evaporate. If it is too dry, pour some additional water through the top of the bottle.
