How Your Previous Relationships Have Affected Your Self-Esteem

As you may already know, your self-esteem strongly influences your relationships with other people.
Your level of self-esteem affects who you will attract and fall in love with, and it affects how successful the relationship will be.
In general, people with low self-esteem form relationships with other people with low self-esteem, and their relationships are generally shorter-lasting and less satisfying compared to relationships between people with high self-esteem.
However, it is not only the case that your self-esteem affects your relationships - your relationships also affect your self-esteem.
Your current level of self-esteem has been built up during your life and it has been affected by every person that you have met.
Some people, those who are precious to you, have the power to affect you more than others.
This is because you care more about their opinion of you compared to how much you care about what other people think about you.
One hurtful comment from your partner (or parent or some other important person to you) can hurt a lot more than a hurtful comment from somebody else.
Likewise, a compliment from your partner can lift you up higher than other compliments.
Your partner has a very powerful influence over you and your self-esteem.
Every relationship that you have had in the past has affected your self-esteem in some way.
If you have had a relationship with a person who truly loved you and helped you to see the positive parts of yourself, your self-esteem will have grown stronger.
On the other hand, if you have gone through a very difficult relationship with a partner that was not good for you, your self-esteem may have become greatly damaged.
You may have been subjected to verbal abuse if your partner continually criticised you or tried to limit your freedom.
However your partner treated you, it will have put its mark on your self-esteem.
When you enter a new relationship it can be good to be aware of how your previous relationships have affected you.
Perhaps your have developed some specific fears or expectations during earlier relationships.
Perhaps you have lost your belief in happy endings? Whatever it is that you're carrying with you into your new relationship it is good if you speak about it openly with your partner.
Together you can heal old scars and build a loving and lasting relationship.
