How to Identify Parts of a Website Address
- 1). Go to your web browsers address bar, and look at the first part of the address, which is the "http://." This is called the HyperText Transfer Protocol, and it is what helps the web browser to find the website online. You will not have to type this in most browsers, because they will automatically add it.
- 2). Go to the second part of the address, which is the www. This stands for World Wide Web, and this would indicate that the website you are going to is located on the World Wide Web.
- 3). Go to the third section of the web address. This is the actual name of the website you are trying to go to. This is located directly in the middle of the address, between the dots. For example, if the website name for the address http://www.google.com, the name of the website is Google.
- 4). Go to the next part of the web address or the .com, or .org. This is the domain name of the website and will tell you what type of website it is. This would be .org for a community organization, .edu for universities, colleges or any educational institutions, .com for a mainstream commercial website, and .gov for a site posted by local, state or federal government.
- 5). Look for a forward slash (/) toward the end of the web address after the .com part. Sometimes this will show up when you are on another page or section of a particular website. For example, if you are on http://www.latimes.com/news/local, this would indicate that you are on the local news page of The Los Angeles Times website.
