How to Fix an Electric Power Car Window
- 1). Check the fuse for the power windows. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual to locate the fuse that controls the windows. Remove the fuse from the fuse box and examine it. If the fuse is blown, it will look slightly burned, or the connection will be damaged. Another sign that the fuse is damaged is if none of the car windows works. If a fuse is damaged, replace it with a new fuse of the same type.
- 2). Verify that there is power to the window's motor and switch. Remove the door panel by taking out any screws holding the panel to the door then carefully prying off the door panel with a screwdriver. Use a 12-volt tester to check the wiring from the fuse box to the window toggle as well as the wiring from the window toggle to the window motor. If there is no power to the wiring, replace the wiring. The ignition must be in the "On" position when the wiring is being tested.
- 3). Test the window toggle itself by using the 12-volt tester on the toggle. There should be two bolts holding the wires to the toggle. Use the 12-volt tester on these bolts to test the toggle. Again, when testing, the ignition must be in the "On" position. If the toggle is broken, replace it.
- 4). Check if anything is blocking the window's movement. Remove any foreign objects from the window. Check the window molding for objects as well. Verify that the window molding is clean and unbroken. If the molding is broken, it may be repairable with super weatherstrip adhesive. If adhesive does not work, replace the molding. The molding may have a sticky substance preventing the window from moving. In this case use silicone spray to clean the molding.
- 5). Lubricate the window motor with white grease on the moving parts. If this does not resolve the problem, replace the window motor.
