    • 1). Learn your chords. First, learn the basic major and minor chords, then, once you are completely comfortable with them, begin learning other chords (7th chords, suspended chords, augmented chords, etc.) Several websites, books and mobile apps provide easy-to-read chord charts.

    • 2). Learn basic rhythms. Start by strumming one chord with a steady quarter-beat rhythm. When you can do this consistently, move on to eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Then work on more complicated rhythms.

    • 3). Change chords while practicing your rhythms. Practice changing from one chord to a wide variety of other chords. Keep practicing until you can easily make basic chord changes.

    • 4). Study popular chord progressions. Some chord progressions, like the I-IV-V chord progression, occurs extensively throughout Western music history. There are an endless amount of different chord progressions, but knowing some of the most basic progressions will make you a better rhythm guitarist.

    • 5). Play with other musicians, specifically a bassist and a drummer. These musicians specialize in playing rhythms. Listen to the beats that the bass and drums accentuate, and work on accentuating those beats yourself.
