5 Great Reasons to Choose Digital Pianos Over Acoustic Pianos
I want to start this article by saying that without a doubt, the piano is my favourite instrument.
For as many years as I remember I have had a touch of excitement and fondness rise up in me every time I see a nice looking piano.
I hope that does not sound odd, but it is the truth.
And as for being in the presence of a Grand Piano, well, you can only imagine the thrill I get.
So it is only with much consideration and research into what is available that I now offer to you five great reasons to choose a digital piano, otherwise known as an electric keyboard, over an acoustic piano.
If we were to go five years back I would not be writing this.
That is because there was a very clear distinction between the playing experience of an acoustic and a digital piano, both in sound and in feel.
But technology can be a wonderful thing and certainly the digital piano's on the market today have blurred that distinction so well that it is barely noticeable.
In fact, in some models of electric keyboard the sound that they produce can sound better than an older acoustic piano.
With that in mind, here are the reasons why I believe more people will choose a digital piano.
1.
Acoustic piano's take up a lot of space Acoustic pianos are quite big and of course grand pianos are huge.
This means that you must have the space to put them in.
These days, with real estate prices increasing and the economy not doing so well, the average person cannot afford a large place to live in.
This means that the chances of having room for a piano are small.
On the other hand, digital piano's take up a lot less room and you can put them in many places within your home.
This versatility is important to many people.
2.
Digital piano's are portable Ever tried carrying an acoustic piano from place to place? Of course not, it just is not possible.
In fact, you will generally need a special piano moving service to do so and this costs money.
Digital piano's however are a lot more portable.
It must be said that there is a range of portability within the digital piano's available on the market and some will take some lugging around, but importantly, it can be done.
Others are designed to be portable and can be carried in one hand by the average person which means moving the electric keyboard between gigs or friends places is a breeze.
3.
Digital piano's don't need tuning This is a big one for me.
Acoustic piano's need to be maintained if you want to keep them in good condition and this requires money.
Whether it be an annual or semi-annual tuning service or the more expensive piano technician to fix some facet of the instrument, there will be ongoing costs in owning an acoustic piano.
Those costs are magnified should you have a baby grand or grand piano.
Conversely, there is generally little maintenance required for a digital piano and it is pitch perfect every time you turn it on and play it.
No twangy keys, no off pitch notes.
Perfection every time.
4.
Variety of sounds and rhythms With an acoustic piano, piano is what you have and all you will ever have.
And for many, that has always been enough.
However there is value in having other sounds available to you to augment a performance.
These sounds can be instead of the piano sound or maybe in conjunction with it.
For those that like to be creative with their music this is a big reason.
The other thing you get with electric keyboards are rhythms to support your playing.
No need to go and hire a drummer, the drums are built into the electric keyboard.
And whilst a piano solo can be the most beautiful music in the world, there is no denying that the deft and subtle addition of drums into a piece of music can lift the feeling add life to a song.
5.
Cost This is a big one for many people so I thought I would end with it.
To get a good acoustic piano you tend to have to spend thousands of dollars and if you are in the market for a baby grand or grand piano then you are talking tens of thousands of dollars.
On the other hand, you can get a good digital piano for under $700.
And there are not all the other ongoing financial costs associated with an acoustic piano which I have touched on above.
In short, buying a digital piano is a more economical choice.
So there you have it, five great reasons to choose a digital piano over an acoustic piano.
Technology has made this possible and many people who would never have been able to own a piano can now have the joy they bring via a digital piano.
For that alone we can all be grateful.
