    • 1). Gather all the books you want to get rid of. Box them up for transportation to the shop. Check the books to ensure they are in good condition. Flip through the pages to ensure that you've not used anything important or personal as a bookmark.

    • 2). Make a list of the books you take to the shop, so you know exactly what you've placed with the shop to sell.

    • 3). Locate several consignment shops in your area. Call them and ask if they accept books for consignment, how long they will keep them and what percentage they take when an item sells. Take your books to the shop that appeals to you most.

    • 4). Get the terms of the consignment agreement and a receipt for the items you place with the shop in writing. Find out whether the shop calls you when your items have sold or whether you need to check in with them periodically. Find out what method of payment they use to disburse funds for sold items.

    • 5). Follow up on the date your consignment agreement ends. Find out whether the shop wants to keep the remaining items longer or whether they want you to take back possession of the books.
